Belgian tax residence certificate: apostille and translation

Does your recipient require an apostille or legalisation of your tax certificate? Prepare its reference and destination country, then check the accepted language.

Understand the process

Who forwards the certificate for authentication?

Link to this section

Foreign Affairs states that the tax certificate is signed and forwarded through eLegalisation by FPS Finance. Its tax residence legalisation or apostille request form provides for submission through MyMinfin. The request concerns authentication of the identified certificate.

Information to prepare for the request

The form asks for your details, national or business number, email address, certificate reference and destination country. Email is required for forwarding to Foreign Affairs, which determines legalisation or apostille under the applicable rules.

When should you request translation?

Link to this section

Tell the recipient the document’s language and confirm whether it is sufficient. If translation is needed, prepare the final version and authentication endorsements to include. Give CertiDocs the target language, purpose and deadline. Questions about tax residence or tax benefits belong with FPS Finance or your tax adviser.

Link the authentication request to the correct certificate: its reference and destination country appear on the Finance form.

Preparation advice from CertiDocs #

Fictional example: you have two certificates covering different periods. The recipient requests only the latest. Identify its reference before preparing authentication and confirm the accepted language. The quote then covers the relevant record and the endorsements actually required.

  • Keep the recipient’s written request with the chosen certificate.
  • Tell the translator which attachments and endorsements must accompany the record.

Frequently asked questions

+Can I leave out my email address?
The official authentication form makes it mandatory for forwarding the request to Foreign Affairs. Check that the address is correct and accessible for follow-up.
+Does an apostille replace translation?
No. Confirm authentication requirements and accepted language separately. If translation is requested, clarify whether it must include the apostille and other endorsements.
