Child travel: parental consent and translation in Belgium

The document depends on the journey. Start with the destination, transit stops and carrier to confirm the form and its language.

Understand the process

Is written consent always required?

Link to this section

There is no universal Belgian form or common EU rule. For a minor travelling alone, with one parent or another adult, check departure, destination and transit requirements. The carrier may also require its own form.

Municipal signature and use abroad

Link to this section

The FPS recommends written consent in certain travel situations. If authentication for abroad is required, check the route for your document with the municipality or notary. Drafting a consent letter does not automatically trigger an apostille.

Translate the correct form

Confirm whether the carrier’s form or a bilingual version is sufficient. If a sworn translation is requested, send the final version with signatures, added endorsements and any parentage evidence. Check names, travel dates and the accompanying adult’s details together before sending.

Preparation advice from CertiDocs #

Fictional example: your child travels with their grandmother and changes planes in another country. You gather the itinerary, requested form and language instructions. Check names and dates before translating the final version to avoid a second order after a flight change.

  • Keep the form with the carrier’s instructions.
  • Ask whether parentage evidence also needs translation.

Frequently asked questions

+Should I automatically translate into English?
No. Confirm the accepted language and whether a sworn translation is required before ordering. A form already accepted in its language may not need translation.
+Do transit stops matter?
Yes. Your Europe notes that a transit country may require consent even when the destination does not. Provide the full itinerary when checking requirements.
