CertiDocsThe practical guide
Does a translation expire in Belgium?
Before reusing a translation, check the source document’s age, the recipient’s requirements and the version actually needed.
Understand the processWhich date should you check?
Distinguish the source document’s issue date from the translation date. Ask the recipient which age limit applies and when it is assessed. Belgian consular guidance in the UAE notes that issue-date requirements depend on the requesting authority. Our advice: retranslating an old extract does not turn it into a recently issued extract.
Does a six-month limit always apply?
Do not generalise a deadline from another procedure. For registering a newborn with Belgian posts in China, the instructions specify a maximum of six months for the legalised, notarised birth certificate with its legalised translation. This specific case does not establish a single duration for all translations in Belgium.
Must the whole translation be redone?
First clarify what is needed: a more recent extract, another language, a correction or a different format. If a new extract is required, send it with the old translation to the professional to define the work needed. A new number, date or annotation may change the text being certified. Keep the signed file intact; the professional must prepare and sign any corrected version.
