Algeria–Belgium apostille: what changes in 2026?
Preparing an Algerian birth certificate, marriage certificate or diploma for Belgium? Identify the record and its issuer first: older legalisation instructions may be out of date.
Understand the processSince 9 July 2026
Link to this sectionThe Belgian embassy confirms the switch to apostilles on 9 July 2026 for Algerian public documents intended for Belgium. Check that the record belongs to a sector covered by the new procedure. Non-public documents and other sectors require a separate procedural check.
Where do you request the apostille?
Link to this sectionApply to the Algerian authority responsible for the document. Algeria’s Foreign Affairs ministry points to the issuing sectors and apostille.gov.dz. Identify the service before paying an intermediary: civil records and court documents do not necessarily use the same office.
What should you send the translator?
Link to this sectionPrepare the readable record with every annotation and the apostille when required. Attach the municipality’s, consulate’s or other recipient’s instructions. Confirm whether the apostille also needs translation. Keep files and originals together so that you do not translate a version that will later be replaced.
Original and translation: are two apostilles needed? #
For the route involving an official translation made in Algeria, the embassy describes three stages: apostille on the original, translation by an official translator-interpreter in Algeria, then apostille on that translation. If you plan to translate in Belgium, confirm the route with the recipient before ordering.
Preparation advice from CertiDocs #
Fictional example: your Arabic birth certificate already has an apostille. This does not establish that a translation added later has received its required authentication. Give the recipient an exact list of available records and the translator its instructions; identify what is missing before rebuilding the file.
- Identify which item each apostille covers: source record or translation.
- Confirm the language and whether stamps, annotations and attachments belong in the translation scope.
